Pugiliştii cubanezi pot încasa în sfârşit prime, ei evoluând doar la amatori după ce Fidel Castro a abolit sportul profesionist în 1962, la trei ani după revoluţia cubaneză.
Boxerii cubanezi îşi reprezintă cu succes ţara la fiecare ediţie a Jocurilor Olimpice de vară. Insula din Caraibe a adunat 80 de titluri mondiale de amatori şi 41 de titluri olimpice de-a lungul anilor, însă cealaltă faţă a monedei a reprezentat-o faptul că mulţi boxeri cubanezi au dezertat în ultimii ani şi au plecat să-şi caute norocul în străinătate.
Vineri, delegaţia cubaneză a fost alcătuită din şase boxeri, dintre care trei campioni olimpici (Julio Cesar La Cruz, Roniel Iglesias şi Arlen Lopez).
Cinci dintre ei s-au impus prin KO: Osvel Caballero (super-pană) l-a învins pe mexicanul Jhosman Reyes; Feliciano Yoenlis Hernandez (supermijlocie) a trecut de mexicanul Juan Carlos Raygoza; Roniel Iglesias (super-welter) a câştigat în faţa lui Brandon Perez, şi el mexican; Arlen Lopez (semigrea) l-a făcut KO pe mexicanul Fernando Galvan; în fine, Julio Cesar La Cruz (grea-uşoară) l-a bătut pe columbianul Deivis Casseres.
Doar Lazaro Alvarez (super-uşoară) a trebuit să aştepte o decizie unanimă a judecătorilor pentru a se impune în faţa mexicanului Francisco Mercado.
“Această reuniune va marca nu numai boxul cubanez, ci şi boxul profesionist, cu şase cubanezi care intră pe uşa din faţă”, a comentat Julio La Cruz după gală.
