Sportivul român Cătălin Chirilă a câştigat medalia de argint în proba de canoe simplu pe 1.000 metri, sâmbătă, la Campionatele Mondiale de kaiac-canoe de la Duisburg (Germania).

Chirilă, campionul mondial en titre în această probă olimpică, nu a reuşit dubla la Duisburg, după ce vineri seara câştigase aurul la 500 metri, dar a obţinut calificarea la Jocurile Olimpice de la Paris de anul viitor.
Sportivul legitimat la CSA Steaua era primul după 250 de metri (52 sec 98/100), la 500 metri era al patrulea (01 min 49 sec 58/100), a fost al treilea la 750 m (02 min 48 sec 65/100), încheind pe locul secund, cu 03 min 45 sec 958/1000.
Cehul Martin Fuksa a cucerit primul său titlu mondial la 1.000 m (03 min 45 sec 124/1000), după cele două obţinute la 500 metri în 2015 şi 2017.
Podiumul a fost completat de germanul Sebastian Brendel, în 03 min 46 sec 581/1000. Brendel este dublu campion olimpic şi are 13 titluri mondiale în palmares.
România a ajuns la 8 sportivi calificaţi la JO Paris 2024: Delvine Meringor (atletism – maraton), David Popovici (înot – 100 m liber), Lăcrămioara Perijoc (box – cat. 54 kg), Vlad Stancu (înot – 800 m liber, 1.500 m liber), Andrea Miklos (atletism – 400 m), Alina Rotaru (atletism – lungime), Annaliese Drăgan (gimnastică ritmică), Cătălin Chirilă (kaiac-canoe, 1.000 m).
