În 2022, la 200 m liber, Popovici a câştigat aurul la Budapesta cu timpul de 1min43sec21/100, nou record mondial de juniori, urmat în clasament atunci de Sunwoo Hwang (Coreea de Sud) şi de Tom Dean (Marea Britanie). David s-a calificat atunci în finală cu 1min44sec40/100.
În 2022, David Popovici a cucerit medaliile de aur la Campionatele Mondiale de la Budapesta, dar şi la Campionatele Europene de la Roma, în probele de 100 m şi 200 m liber.
De asemenea, el a stabilit un nou record mondial în proba de 100 m liber, cu timpul de 46 sec 86/100, în cadrul Europenelor din capitala Italiei.
