Laureatul premiului Nobel petnru Chimie Ei-ichi Negishi, recompensat in 2010 impreuna cu compatriotul sau Akira Suzuki si americanul Richard Heck, a murit la varsta de 85 de ani, a anuntat vineri universitatea americana unde preda, scrie AFP.
Negishi a murit duminica, la Indianapolis, iar familia sa va repatria corpul in Japonia anul viitor, potrivit Universitatii Purdue.
Celor trei chimisti li s-a atribuit Nobelul pentru ca au creat unele dintre cele mai sofisticate unelte ale chimiei, deschizand calea catre tratamente pentru cancer si pentru produse electronice si plastice revolutionare.
Descoperirile lor permit sutelor de oameni de stiinta sa sintetizeze numeroase substante prezente in natura, de la marile Italiei pana la oceanele filipineze si la jungla indoneziana Borneo, potrivit Comitetului Nobel.
Negishi a comparat munca lor cu piesele unui joc de “lego care pot fi puse impreuna pentru a face fel de fel de forme, marimi sau culori”, noteaza comunicatul de la Purdue.
“Lumea a pierdut un om mare si fermecator, pe cineva care a facut o diferenta in viata oamenilor atat ca om de stiinta, cat si ca fiinta”, a spus presedintele Purdue, Mitch Daniels. “Suntem intristati de decesul sau dar recunoscatori pentru descoperirile sale care au schimbat lumea”, a adaugat el.
Nascut in 1935, la Changchun, un oras japonez pe atunci, dar chinez astazi, profesorul Negishi a crescut in Japonia unde si-a terminat studiile, inainte de a se angaja la o intreprindere de produse chimice si farmaceutice, Teijin. Dar si-a dat seama imediat ca pentru a face chimie de inalt nivel, trebuia sa ajunga in Statele Unite, “care erau in epoca dominante” in materie de cercetare stiintifica.
Negishi a sosit in SUA in 1960 pentru a studia la Universitatea din Philadelphia unde si-a obtinut doctoratul 1963. In 1979, a fost numit profesor la Universitatea Purdue (Indiana) unde a devenit profesor emerit.
