Atletele Joan Chelimo, Stella Ruto şi Delvine Meringor au primit astăzi cetăţenia română, după ce au depus jurământul la Autoritatea Naţională pentru Cetăţenie. Cele trei sportive kenyence au astfel posibilitatea să concureze la Jocurile Olimpice de la Tokyo.

“Premieră pentru atletismul românesc. Joan Chelimo (31 de ani), Stella Ruto (26 de ani) şi Delvine Meringor (29 de ani) au devenit azi primele atlete de pe continentul african care primesc cetăţenia română! Legitimate la clubul Steaua Bucureşti, Joan, Stella şi Delvine au depus jurământul la Autoritatea Naţională pentru Cetăţenie în prezenţa preşedintelui Federaţiei Române de Atletism, Florin Florea, a reprezentanţilor clubului Steaua Bucureşti şi a antrenorului Carol Şanta. Cele trei sportive pot reprezenta de acum România în toate competiţiile internaţionale. Joan şi Delvine au realizat deja baremul pentru Jocurile Olimpice în proba de maraton, iar Stella va încerca să se califice în proba de 5.000 de metri sau în cea de 3.000 metri obstacole”, se arată într-un comunicat al Federaţiei Române de Atletism.
Pentru a putea participa la Jocurile Olimpice de la Tokyo, Federaţia Internaţională de Atletism ar trebui să confirme eligibilitatea sportivelor calificate Federaţiei Române de Atletism şi Comitetului Olimpic şi Sportiv Român.
“Este un moment foarte important pentru atletism românesc. Arătăm tuturor că suntem o naţiune deschisă, cu o gândire europeană şi prin sosirea celor trei atlete întărim echipa României. Îmi doresc ca în 4-6 ani România să evolueze în Superliga Europei”, a declarat Florin Florea, preşedintele Federaţiei Române de Atletism.
Atleta Joan Chelimo a afirmat că şi-ar dori să câştige cât mai multe medalii pentru România: “Sunt foarte fericită că am obţinut cetăţenia română. Vreau să cuceresc cât mai multe medalii, medalii la Jocurile Olimpice şi Campionatele Mondiale şi să fac România mândră”.
Antrenorul Carol Şanta a afirmat că aşteaptă momentul naturalizării celor trei atlete de cinci ani.
“Aştept acest moment de cinci ani. Am reuşit azi să aduc în România trei atlete foarte valoroase şi sper ca măcar una dintre ele să cucerească o medalie la Jocurile Olimpice. Îmi doresc să mă retrag după un astfel de moment”, a afirmat Şanta.
Prima competiţie la care cele trei sportive vor participa în România în acest an este Campionatul Naţional de 5.000 şi 10.000 de metri, de la Piteşti, de săptămâna viitoare.
România are până acum cinci atleţi calificaţi la JO de la Tokyo, Florentina Iuşco (săritura în lungime), Alina Rotaru (săritura în lungime), Claudia Bobocea (1.500 m), Daniela Stanciu (săritura în înălţime) şi Alin Firfirică (aruncarea discului).
