Potrivit unei estimări a Organizaţiei Naţiunilor Unite (ONU), în anul 2100 România va avea 11.877.960 locuitori.
Numărul populaţiei va fi cu peste 7 milioane mai mic faţă de situaţia din prezent, când sunt înregistraţi aproximativ 19 milioane de români. În 2040, România ar urma să aibă 17.306.604 locuitori, iar în 2050, cifra estimată de ONU este de 16.259.784 persoane.
De asemenea, numărul persoanelor în vârstă de peste 60 de ani se va dubla până în 2050 şi se va tripla până la sfârşitul acestui secol. Întreaga populaţie a Europei urmează acest trend în următoarele decade astfel că în 2050, peste o treime dintre locuitorii bătrânului continent vor fi vârstnici. Populaţia lumii va creşte până în 2100 la peste 10,8 miliarde, potrivit aceluiaşi studiu al Naţiunilor Unite, de la 7,8 miliarde în anul 2020.
Estimarea ONU cu privire la populația României în 2100
În România, trendul de descreștere va fi mult mai pronunțat în mediul rural, în special în zonele montane. De exemplu, în județul Alba, peste 60 de sate au mai puțin de 10 locuitori, dar sunt și așezări-fantomă, în care nu mai locuiește nimeni. Majoritatea sunt din Munții Apuseni.
Zona Apusenilor s-a depopulat într-un ritm și mai accelerat și din cauza politicii duse de autoritățile comuniste.
Drepturile moților ce datau, unele, de dinainte de primul război mondial, au fost anulate treptat, iar în 1965 definitiv, ceea ce a afectat dramatic gospodăriile tradiționale. Fără alte posibilități, oamenii erau nevoiți să plece spre orașe. Mulți dintre ei au plecat sau chiar au fost strămutați spre Zlatna, Alba Iulia sau spre județele în care începuseră să se dezvolte centre industriale comuniste.
În ultimii 15 ani, depopularea a fost accentuată şi de plecările masive în alte ţări, pentru locuri de muncă, după intrarea României în Uniunea Europeană. În Apuseni există chiar sate complet depopulate, care au fost complet şterse de pe hartă. În ultimii ani, se constată că cele mai multe comune din această zonă şi-au diminuat major populaţia, faţă de numărul maxim al populaţiei atins în timp, conform unui studiu întreprins de Universitatea „1 Decembrie” din Alba Iulia.
